Firearm Sales & Transfers
WV Wild Outdoors is a licensed Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL). All firearm sales and transfers are conducted in accordance with:
- Federal firearms laws and ATF regulations
- West Virginia state firearms laws
- Required background check procedures (NICS)
- Proper identification and documentation requirements
We reserve the right to refuse any sale or transfer at our discretion.
Age Requirements
Federal law requires the following minimum ages for firearm purchases from a licensed dealer like WV Wild Outdoors:
- 18 years or older for rifles and shotguns (long guns)
- 21 years or older for handguns
- Valid government-issued photo ID required for all purchases
Prohibited Persons
Under federal law (18 U.S.C. § 922(g)), certain individuals are prohibited from purchasing or possessing firearms. You cannot buy a firearm from WV Wild Outdoors if you:
- Have been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for more than one year
- Are a fugitive from justice
- Are an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance
- Have been adjudicated as a mental defective or committed to a mental institution
- Are an illegal alien or were admitted under a nonimmigrant visa
- Have been dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces
- Have renounced your U.S. citizenship
- Are subject to a qualifying restraining order
- Have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence
These prohibitions are federal law. For more information, visit the ATF's Prohibited Persons guide.
Straw Purchases Are Illegal
A "straw purchase" is when you buy a firearm for someone else who cannot legally purchase it themselves. This includes buying a gun for a prohibited person, a minor, or anyone who cannot pass a background check.
Straw purchases are a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 922(a)(6) and can result in up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
When you fill out ATF Form 4473, you are certifying that you are the actual buyer of the firearm. If you're buying a gun as a gift for someone who can legally own it, that's okay—but they still need to be eligible to possess firearms.
What to Bring for Firearm Purchases
To purchase a firearm at WV Wild Outdoors, you'll need:
- Valid government-issued photo ID with your current address (driver's license or state ID, or a passport plus a second government-issued document showing your current address, such as a vehicle registration or property tax bill)
- Ability to complete ATF Form 4473 in person
- Time to complete the NICS background check (often while you wait, though delays are possible)
For more information about federal firearms requirements, visit ATF.gov/firearms.
Out-of-State Buyers
If you're not a West Virginia resident, here's what you need to know:
- Handguns: Federal law (18 U.S.C. § 922(b)(3)) does not allow us to transfer handguns to out-of-state residents. We can ship to an FFL dealer in your home state, and you'll complete the transfer there.
- Long guns (rifles/shotguns): We can transfer these to you directly if the sale complies with both West Virginia law and your home state's laws.
If you're coming from out of state, give us a call at (304) 649-2607 beforehand so we can walk through the requirements for your situation.
Returns & Refunds - Firearms
All firearm sales at WV Wild Outdoors are final once the transfer is complete. Once you take possession of a firearm after completing ATF Form 4473 and passing the NICS background check, the sale cannot be reversed.
Please inspect your firearm before we start the paperwork. Check the action, bore, finish, and overall condition. Once you sign Form 4473 and take possession, the sale is final. We want you to be completely satisfied, so take your time looking it over first.
If you change your mind before the transfer is complete, please let us know. Background check fees are non-refundable once the NICS check is initiated.
Hunting & Fishing Licenses
As an authorized WV DNR license agent, we sell West Virginia hunting and fishing licenses. License sales are governed by WV Division of Natural Resources regulations.
Licenses are non-transferable. Under WV Code §20-2-36, it is unlawful to transfer a license to another person.
Lost or damaged licenses can be replaced for a $1 fee under WV Code §20-2-32. Please double-check your license type before completing your purchase.
