What to Fish
Largemouth Bass
The DNR doesn't hand out #1 rankings lightly. Stonewall Jackson has held that title for bass fishing for over 10 years. The lake is full catch-and-release for black bass, which keeps the population healthy and the fishing excellent.
Tips: Work the standing timber and submerged roadbeds at 8-15 feet. Soft plastics and crankbaits produce year-round. Spring spawn brings fish shallow into the coves.
Muskellunge
If you're after musky, this lake ranks among the best in the state. Fish over 50 inches are caught here regularly. The 52-inch minimum harvest means most go back, which is fine by us — they're more fun to catch than to clean anyway.
Tips: Spring and fall are prime. Cast shallow-running plugs in upper tributaries or troll deep-diving crankbaits in the main lake. Target bridge abutments and underwater structure.
Crappie
Both black and white crappie are present and stack up around the standing timber during spring spawn. Good numbers with decent size.
Tips: Jigs and minnows around submerged timber at 8-15 feet. Spring and early summer are best. Fish the backs of coves during spawn.
Walleye, Catfish & More
Walleye are present throughout the lake. Channel catfish, bluegill, white bass, and yellow perch round out the options. Something biting for everyone.
Tips: Walleye hold on points and ledges — troll or jig. Bluegill stack up in shallow coves year-round. Catfish respond to cut bait in deeper holes.
Where to Fish
Main Lake Points & Ledges
The main lake offers consistent structure fishing. Points dropping into deeper water hold bass, walleye, and musky year-round. Electronics help here — find the baitfish and the predators follow.
Upper Tributaries
The upper arms of the lake offer shallower water and excellent spring fishing. Musky push up here in cooler months. Bass spawn in the back coves. Good bank fishing access in some areas.
Standing Timber & Roadbeds
The 1988 impoundment left plenty of submerged structure. Standing timber and old roadbeds at 8-15 feet hold crappie, bass, and panfish. Mark these spots on your GPS and work them methodically.
